MY BITTER EXPERIENCE WITH PRIVACY AND HOW BLOCKCHAIN CAN SOLVE IT.
The world was taken by the storm when the Internet was launched. At the time of inception, it was only a few people that realized the importance of such a fast and cost-effective medium of communication. More so, the Internet was one of the reasons why many individuals and even companies have been able to transcript faster across the borders.
Aside from the Internet, other technological strides were invented as a way of improving the global channel of communication. So, it came to be that many companies and individuals around the world can then interact without hassles.
THE CHALLENGE I HAD
Just like many other people around the world, it wasn’t long before I began to use many of these innovations, notable among which is the Internet. Like millions of smartphone users around the world, I soon began to use social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram as a way of boosting my presence in the highly competitive cyberspace.
It was only a few years down the line that the bubble burst, and I realized I was playing into the hands of my enemies. Besides, I wasn’t the only one that was in this problem. Many other people have been in the same issue, and many others would continue to be embroidered in the same problem.
So, what are these issues, and how do they affect the “common man in the street?” Highlighted below are some of the problems in the world today, and many of them border on the compromise of people’s privacies.
COMPROMISE OF USER’S DATA
The first challenge is the compromise of users’ data. Although many people are yet to come to terms with this, once people sign up to social networks or any other online platform, their personal information/data would be under threats. I was a victim of this, and I have now come to realize that I have been falling into the web crafted by “the powers that be.”
I signed up on Facebook and was very happy with the instant connection it gave me. My classmates, whom I’ve lost contacts with for many years were right there on the platform! What a reunion it was for us as we reminisced on our days in school. I also made more connections with people in my area of specialization.
Then, the biggest scandal came through about a year ago when the “Facebook Analytica” scandal broke out. At first, only a few people understood the implication. It was a few months later that it came to the fore that the platform (Facebook) had been mining or generating information from the data the users posted on the platform.
Facebook and many other social media platforms have been using our information against us. The worst of it was that many of the data were made available to the government. With that, the government can easily control our affairs and have insights when people or citizens begin to raise doubts against their policies.
THE OVERT MONOPOLY BY THE GOVERNMENT
It’s no news that the government controls many of the things around the world today. From the financial institutions to the communication sectors, the government always finds a way to direct the affairs to its taste.
So, the recent regulations in the cyberspace is a step towards clamping down on the citizens and users that are likely to raise antagonist or contrary opinions about the government’s activities. The measure was informed because of the new communication approach tenable on social networks, where the users can send information at no cost and in real-time.
Therefore, by clamping down on that and using the data purchased from the social network bigwigs, many other people around the world and I continue to be victims of the government’s excessive surveillance.
INTEGRATING BLOCKCHAIN AS SOLUTION
On the contrary, the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), aka Blockchain was launched as a different approach to the centralized model that has been in vogue for many years. Instead of the centralization of authorities, Blockchain technology created a peer-like medium of communication.
Now, when this comes into the picture, millions of people around the world can communicate without government control or influence. More so, it would be challenging for third party and centralized platforms like the social media networks to gain access into our activities.
THE SOLUTION TO PRIVACY ISSUES
I took great interest in the Blockchain technology after I realized the potentials. Interestingly, I have looked into the features in the Stegos Blockchain platform. From the features I’ve seen so far, the platform has what it takes to foster full-scale privacy in all industries.
So, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to integrate the Blockchain technology formulations like the one on the Stegos Blockchain to make every industry in the world genuinely private.
